Ponen en riesgo la salud de Miguel Cotto
En el amor y en el boxeo, lo que se hace a prisa usualmente se hace mal. Pues en ambos casos, la razón y la paciencia se tiran por la borda cuando hay dinero de por medio .El presidente de Top Rank, Bob Arum, anda loco en su intento de firmar un combate entre Miguel Cotto y Manny Pacquiao para el 14 de noviembre. Es ahora o nunca, dice con sus actos. Pero en su afán de lucro--el cual es harto obvio y hasta entendible--se desecha la salud a largo plazo del monarca puertorriqueño.

El doctor Bobby Muñoz Zayas, quien trabajó con Felix "Tito" Trinidad en su época de campeón, le recomendó a Cotto seis meses fuera del cuadrilátero. Eso como mínimo, según destaca el diario El Nuevo Día.
La herida fue producto de un cabezazo iniciado por Clottey y requirió 26 puntos de sutura. Muñoz Zayas lo dijo todo al señalar que "sería muy triste que por pelear antes de tiempo, vaya a lastimarse permanentemente".

Si no lo creen, miren lo que le ha pasado a un guerrero como Israel Vázquez, quien sufrió el desprendimiento de la rétina en su ojo derecho tras sus brutales combates ante Rafael Márquez. "El Magnífico" lleva fuera del ring desde marzo de 2008, y aún no se sabe si podrá regresar ni ser el mismo. Ni hablar de su vida después del ring.
En una entrevista que le hicimos a Cotto hace un par de años, le preguntamos sobre las críticas de que se deja expuesto a recibir demasiado castigo en sus peleas. Cotto contestó algo así como que "eso es el boxeo". Hay que estar dispuesto a recibir golpes.
Y es cierto. Ese es el trabajo del boxeador. Pero la labor de los que lo rodean es velar por su bienestar a corto y largo plazo. Esperar al 2010 para que la cortadura sane completamente no le hará daño a nadie. Quizás sólo a Bob Arum. Pero él sólo recibirá los beneficios y no tendrá que vivir con las consecuencias de una pelea realizada a destiempo.
