Derek Jeter es el Deportista del Año
Continúa el año de ensueño de Derek Jeter, quien fue seleccionado como el Deportista del Año por la revista Sports Illustrated, el primer jugador de los Yankees de Nueva York que obtiene el premio.Jeter guió a los Yanquis a su primer campeonato de la Serie Mundial desde 2000 y el quinto de su carrera tras una de sus mejores campañas de su carrera. Bateó para .334 y cometió la menor cantidad de errores en un año (8) para recibir su cuarto Guante de Oro.
El jugador de 35 años y capitán de los Yanquis también recibió el premio Roberto Clemente a la excelencia dentro y fuera del terreno de juego. Durante la temporada rebasó el récord de hits del club que estaba en manos de Lou Gehrig.
La revista hizo el anuncio el lunes y el editor Terry McDonell dijo que Jeter "aporta dignidad y excelencia al juego".
El premio se entrega desde 1954. Michael Phelps lo ganó en 2008.
