Prepárate para más juegos de postemporada en el béisbol
Si le hacen caso al sindicato de jugadores, habrá que prepararse para más juegos de postemporada en las Grandes Ligas.A los peloteros les gustaría que la primera ronda de los playoffs se ampliara, para disputar series a un máximo de siete
juegos a partir del 2012.
Esto sería cuando comienza la vigencia de su próximo contrato colectivo, dijo Michael Weiner el miércoles, en su
primera conferencia de prensa desde que sustituyó a Donald Fehr como líder del sindicato.
"Hay mucho apoyo para una serie divisional de siete juegos", dijo Weiner. "Pienso que un calendario de postemporada bien estructurado podría albergar tres series de siete juegos, extendiéndose menos que este año".
La primera ronda de la postemporada se ha disputado a un máximo de cinco juegos desde 1995, cuando se instituyó.
Weiner espera que la duración de la postemporada pueda abreviarse el año próximo, y se mostró satisfecho por las
afirmaciones del comisionado de las Grandes Ligas, Bud Selig, quien dijo que tratará de reducir los días de descanso en los playoffs.
Cuatro días adicionales de descanso se incluyeron en el 2007, a petición de las cadenas de televisión.
Como resultado, los Angelinos y los Yanquis jugaron sólo ocho juegos en los primeros 20 días de la postemporada.
"Todos estamos de acuerdo en que el calendario de la postemporada requiere de algunos ajustes", dijo Weiner.

Debido a que la postemporada se extendió hasta noviembre, las transacciones previas a la próxima campaña empezaron después de la fecha habitual. Sólo nueve de 171 agentes libres habían alcanzado acuerdos, lo que ocasionó que algunos representantes acusaran a los dueños de organizarse para frenar esos convenios.
"Esto me preocupa un poco. Ha sido un tanto lento", dijo Weiner. "Creo que es muy pronto para sacar conclusiones respecto
de la forma en que se desenvolverá este mercado".
Weiner fue aprobado por unanimidad como director general del Sindicato de Peloteros de las Grandes Ligas durante la reunión anual de la junta ejecutiva de la organización, en Scottsdale, Arizona.
El egresado de la Facultad de Derecho de Harvard, de 47 años, fue contratado por el sindicato como abogado en 1988, y ascendido a jefe de asuntos legales en el 2004. Sustituye a Fehr, de 61 años, quien había ocupado el cargo desde diciembre de 1983 y anunció en junio sus intenciones de retirarse.
