The 'Mexican-Donovan' called racist, insensitive and hilarious
Landon Donovan is causing a stir in Mexico and it's not because he scored a goal against their national soccer team.
Donovan, the American soccer star who is well known in Mexico, stars in a local TV commercial for lottery game called 'GanaGol'. He appears in the ad, dressed as stereotypical Mexican peasant, with a huge sombrero, a traditional poncho known as a 'jorongo', and wearing a large mustache that is so obviously fake, it's funny.
The joke being told in the commercial is that an American illegal immigrant tried to look like a local Mexican in order to try and sneak into the country in order to make easy money playing 'GanaGol', which is only available on the Mexican side of the border. The 'Mexican-Donovan' is promptly caught by a border guard who sends him packing back to the U.S.
While walking back in frustration, towards the U.S. border, Donovan utters a chant which Mexican soccer fans often use to torment rivals when playing their beloved national team. Ahem... No translation...
Some in Mexico have called the commercial racist and insensitive and others find it hilarious. Donovan is a star in Mexico, equally hated for playing against the Mexico team as well as admired for his tenacious game. The striker was very outspoken last year when talking about facing Mexico during the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and his name has also been mentioned as a possible future addition to Club America, one of Mexico's most popular soccer teams, owned by 'Televisa', the Mexican media giant.
Judge for yourself by watching the video:
'GanaGol' is also owned by the 'Televisa' which knew that casting Donovan in such an ad would generate attention and buzz, helping drive awareness and sales of their new lottery game.

That is a great commercial. It helps to lighten any tension between America and Mexico.
Mexico is a wonderful country filled with good people.
Someday day we may be trying to escape America and enter Mexico...who Knows.

Mexico is in America, as is Brazil, Canada, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, and the United States. America is the name of a set of continents: North America, Central America, South America. The United State (of America) is the country just north of Mexico.

I agree! in spite of the current crisis in Mexico, living along the border I can attest. Now, the comercial is funny, Mexico is known for its sense of humor and they pick on themselves more than half the time. GanaGol is so good that Americans would want to play it and win it... what's not so funny about that?

@r 1303... you might want to get your geography straight. central america is not a continent, it's part of north america. And by the way mexico is los estados unidos de mexico= the united states of mexico. And they call this country america because the untied states is understood and already implied.....
