Ever since the Dream Team barnstormed the Iberian peninsula during the '92 Barcelona Olympics there has been more Latin flavor to the game of basketball here in the United States; and for an entire generation of aspiring athletes around the globe, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird replaced Pele, Ronaldo, and Ronaldhino as the driving forces behind their athletic ambitions. That summer in Spain changed some standards. Millions of Latinos decided that basketball, not futbol or beisbol, was the game they were destined to play.

It was in a 'barrio' of Caracas, Venezuela known as Coche that the residuals of that dominant gold medal run found Greivis Vasquez, and subsequently, where Vasquez honed his game among the malandros, or drug dealers, that tried to recruit him long before the Maryland Terrapins showed any interest in his game. But they could have never persuaded him to be a part of their team, because one thing that nearly everyone can agree upon is Vasquez's focus and singular ambition to succeed as a basketball player. In an interview with the 'Washington Post', Nestor Salazar, the Venezuelan National team's coach, explains this drive through the environment in which it was fostered: "When you live in the barrios, every boy has to prove that he's a man...Greivis proved his manliness through basketball."

Vasquez has done far more than just proving his manliness through basketball. His precocity on the blacktop led him out of the grim future Caracas offered out to Montrose Christian High School in Rockville, MD, before winning player of the year honors in the Atlantic Coast Conference and becoming the first player in ACC history to record 2,000 points 750 assists and 600 rebounds. Not bad for a league whose alumni include Jordan and Tim Duncan. Now, just as the Dream Team before him, Vasquez's dazzling style of play is bringing basketball, and hope to Venezuela.

Faltando poco más de 100 días para el draft de la NBA Greivis es el prospecto número 21 según NBADraft.net, con un tremendo puntaje de 90 sobre 100 en el análisis que hacen del jugador dándole 9 puntos como pasador, en liderazgo y en tamaño para la posición; 8 puntos en manejo de balón, capacidad para jugar hoy mismo en la NBA e intangibles; 7 puntos en velocidad, salto en el lanzamiento y potencial de mejora y seis puntos en condiciones atléticas, defensa y fortaleza física.

Esta temporada fue nombrado en cuatro oportunidades como el mejor de la semana, fue elegido mejor jugador de la ACC y también parte del equipo ideal de 'The Sporting News', todos puntos muy fuertes para ser considerado como MVP de la NCAA, además del valor intrínseco como piloto que tiene Greivis para la excelente campaña de los Terrapins este año.
